Map of M… – The Adventure to Sylvia the Owl

One sunny morning, a loud buzzing filled the air around the Animal Detectives’ little house. A swarm of bees flew just above the roof, gathering nectar from the bright tropical flowers by the lake. It was a clear sign that the day would be perfect for an adventure—a trip to visit the wise owl, Sylwia.

After a quick morning stretch led by Kuba the lion and a hearty breakfast, the five friends packed their backpacks. Inside they put water, fruits, and snacks to keep their energy up for the journey. Each detective also carried their special tool: Patrycja had her magnifying glass, Kuba his compass, Zofia her binoculars, Alfred a brush for tracking footprints, and Ala a small mirror for signaling.

They set off on a winding path through a thick jungle filled with tall tropical trees and twisting vines. The air was warm and humid, and around them, colorful birds sang while monkeys jumped from branch to branch. As they walked, the sunlight filtered softly through the leafy canopy. But the deeper they went, the more the jungle began to thin out. The tall trees gave way to shorter acacia bushes, and the air grew drier—signs that the dry season was coming soon.

While walking, the friends talked eagerly about the mysterious map they had found under the floor of their house during a big renovation. The map was old and torn, with only the words “Map of M…” still visible.

“I wonder what that writing means,” said Patrycja, hopping from stone to stone on the path.

“Maybe it stands for ‘Map of Mistakes’,” suggested Kuba. “Like a map that tricks travelers!”

Alfred stopped for a moment, sniffing the air. “That would explain why someone hid it away. Maybe it’s dangerous.”

“Or perhaps it’s a ‘Map of Minds’,” added Zofia, stretching her neck above the tall grass to look ahead. “I heard that long ago, wise people drew maps of their ideas to remember important things.”

Ala the parrot flew in spirals above them. “A Map of Minds sounds so clever! But what if it’s a Map of Music?? Or a Map of Magic Bubbles?”

“Or even a Map of Magic with spells!” Alfred said excitedly. “Old books sometimes have maps leading to secret places.”

After a long discussion, they agreed the map was probably either a Map of Mistakes or a Map of Minds. But since the map was damaged, they didn’t know for sure. Zofia was especially curious about the Map of Minds idea—hoping it might lead to a place full of wisdom.

“But the map is torn,” Patrycja reminded them wisely. “The real answer might be waiting for us with Sylwia the owl.”

Two hours later, after walking through the thinning jungle that turned into open savannah dotted with acacia trees and golden grasses, they reached their destination.

Before them stood a mighty baobab tree—the oldest and largest tree in the area. Its wide trunk was so thick that even ten lions hugging it wouldn’t reach all the way around. High up in the branches, inside a hollow, lived Sylwia, the wisest owl in all the land. On the trunk hung ladders woven from vines, and at the base stood a wooden post with a carved sign: “LIBRARY OF KNOWLEDGE—SHARING WISDOM FOR FREE.”

Around the baobab grew wild bushes bursting with colorful flowers, filling the air with sweet scents that attracted butterflies and hummingbirds. But today, a strange silence surrounded the tree.

“Kuba called out loudly, “Sylwia! It’s us, the Animal Detectives!”

Only his echo answered back, bouncing off the thick trunk. The air smelled faintly of blooming acacia, but there was no sign of Sylwia.

Quick and nimble Patrycja climbed the vine ladder into the hollow. Inside, it was dim and smelled of old parchment and dusty books. On a branch hung a small note tied with a piece of leather string, written in Sylwia’s neat handwriting.

“I flew away to the annual meeting of wise owls in the abandoned land at the far end of the savannah. I’ll be back in three weeks. Sylwia.”

Patrycja read the note aloud with a shaky voice.

Down below, the friends sighed sadly. Three weeks was a long time to wait, especially with the dry season coming soon.

“The dry season will be very hot,” Alfred worried. “Traveling will be hard, and the lakes will shrink.”

Zofia gazed into the distance, watching leaves on some trees already turning yellow. “And we still don’t know if it really is a Map of Mistakes.”

With heavy hearts, they started their journey home. The sun climbed higher, making the air hotter. The savannah seemed less friendly now. The yellow grasses and leafless bushes showed the land preparing for dryness. Closer to home, the landscape changed again, becoming greener, with denser trees and lush jungle plants.

The walk back was quiet. Each detective was lost in their own thoughts. When they passed through a thick bamboo forest growing in a valley between hills, a sudden sound stopped them.

“Help! We’re lost! We can’t find our way!”

Two small owls were tangled among the bamboo stalks. Their big round eyes were full of tears and worry, and their feathers were ruffled from struggling through the thick plants.

Patrycja gently asked, “Who are you?”

“I’m Siwka, and this is my sister Bielka,” one owl sniffled. “We were on our way to the great meeting of wise owls, but we got lost in this scary bamboo maze!”

The Animal Detectives forgot their own worries at once and jumped to help. Kuba led the group, using his strength to clear a safe path through the dense bamboo. Zofia used her long neck to see over the bamboo tops and guide them. Patrycja carefully checked the ground for safe steps. Alfred followed animal tracks to find trails others had taken. Ala flew overhead, warning of dead ends and keeping everyone on track.

It was hard work. The bamboo was as tall as trees, growing so close they formed a green tunnel. The air was warm and sticky, and the paths twisted and turned, often ending in dead ends or leading in circles.

After thirty minutes of hard work, they finally reached an open space by the lake’s edge.

The little owls were very thankful and wanted to repay their helpers.

“Why do you go to the wise owls’ meeting when you are so young?” Ala asked curiously.

Siwka and Bielka straightened up proudly. Their eyes sparkled with joy. “We are the best students at our school! We received special invitations for the most talented young owls from all around!”

After warm goodbyes, and promises to tell Sylwia about their new friends, the Animal Detectives headed home as the sun was setting.

They were tired from the hot day and sad that their mystery was still unsolved. That night, unlike usual, they didn’t sing around the campfire. Instead, they lay quietly, each thinking about the mysterious map.

The next morning was gloomy. Even their usual morning exercises felt dull without Kuba’s usual roar of excitement. Breakfast was quiet too. Alfred ate his oats without joy, Zofia nibbled palm leaves without appetite, and Patrycja stared at the torn map through her magnifying glass, hoping to find a new clue.

Suddenly, a loud knocking interrupted the silence.

“Tok-tok-tok-tok!”

“A messenger for the Animal Detectives! An important message from wise owl Sylwia!” called a strong voice.

Opening the door, they saw a magnificent toucan with a rainbow-colored beak and shiny feathers. A small leather bag with many pockets hung from his wing.

“I am Teofil the Toucan, official messenger of wise owl Sylwia,” he said with a bow. “I bring very important news about your mystery!”

The animals jumped with excitement. Their sadness vanished instantly.

Teofil pulled out a small scroll tied with a red ribbon and unrolled it with a grand gesture.

“Those two young owls you helped in the bamboo maze safely reached the meeting and told Sylwia about your problem with the mysterious map.”

The detectives listened closely, not daring to interrupt.

“Wise owl Sylwia remembers an important detail,” Teofil continued. “She recalls that Lemonek the sloth, whom you visited on one of your past adventures, once told her about finding a fragment of a very old map with the word ASIA written on it.”

“Lemonek!” Patrycja exclaimed. “Of course! Why didn’t we think of that before?”

Teofil nodded seriously. “The word ASIA might be a girl’s name, but it could also mean the continent of Asia in English. Sylwia advises you to prepare well and travel there. Lemonek might need a little favor in return for his help.”

Joy and energy burst back into the house like magic. Alfred bounced happily, Kuba roared triumphantly, Zofia danced on her long legs, and Ala flew around singing her favorite song.

“We’re planning a great expedition to see Lemonek!” Patrycja declared, lifting her magnifying glass like a flag.

“Maybe we’ll finally solve the mystery and find out if the map really is a Confusing Map!” Kuba added eagerly.

The house filled with laughter, chatter, and busy preparations. They packed their bags and planned the route. The exciting adventure that awaited promised to be the most thrilling yet in their detective careers!

But that is a story for another time.
